As people are examining the South Carolina Primary, trying to figure out what exactly was going on, more and more seem to pointing towards Gingrich's strong numbers with evangelical Christians. You know, the strong morals, family values crowd.
It may be that Romney is a Mormon. That certainly accounts for some of it, but if that is the whole of it, it is more than people have ever seemed to care this much before.
Romney is a former missionary, a family man. That doesn't mean he doesn't have skeletons in his closet, but if they are there, he has kept them hidden in a culture where the ability to keep such things quiet means he probably should be running the CIA, or at least placed in charge of National secrets. Normally, that sort of public persona is gold with the evangelicals.
But now they want Gingrich? The guy who cheated on his wife even as he was hunting down Clinton for doing the same? What is it about this guy that appeals so much?
I say this owning that I am just a bewildered observer. I certainly won't be voting in the Republican Primaries, and while I self-identify as an evangelical in my faith, I certainly don't mean the same thing when I say it as most pundits do when they use the term politically.
But why Gingrich? Seriously, how does this guy have ANY traction at all?
