According to the NYT article "nothing like Foxconn City exists in the United States."

That Americans have become lazy and entitled. I can't imagine American workers willingly working overtime like those Asians did without complaining and making a big fuss. We have created a society in which people expect the world on a golden platter. Gone are the days when men worked all day without complaint just to provide for their families.
Do you know anything about the work environment in China? Just because we hear so little about their complaints doesn't mean that they aren't complaining, check this story about an entire factory of workers who all threatened to kill themselves for better working conditions.
The Times seems to consider that a BAD thing. It also states, "Companies and other economists say that notion is naïve. Though Americans are among the most educated workers in the world, the nation has stopped training enough people in the mid-level skills that factories need, executives say." So apparently those jobs soldering connections and screwing together consoles are only going to China because that is too complex for American HS grads to comprehend.
It should be noted that the only thing novel about the Foxconn factory suicide threat is the "mass" part; there have already been several past cases of despairing workers going up there and leaping individually. Apparently it was not noteworthy until a couple hundred did it at once. There is something deeply chilling about American CEOs whose reaction is "I wish America could be more like that. " They are working hard to achieve that dream.

The difference is there would be tremendous hue and cry over such subsidies in the US.

You did not say it, but citing the importance of cheaper supplies suggests it.
