My personal belief what Jon Huntsman did was admirable, but I am a not a typical Republican voter and you know that ;)

It is not quite the same and you also know that. Now with your other two examples of past republicans working for Democratic posts, those are closer to non-political appointments. Colin Powell was serving as a military post when he served as the JCS, he was merely the top general. Now when he served as political appointments he served under republican presidents, National Security Advisor(Reagan) and Secretary of State (George W Bush). Robert Gates on the other hand was appointed under George W. Bush, Obama retained him to maintain an orderly transition.

Also an ambassador unlike a general is definitely an appointment with political entanglements. With a general on the other hand we pretend politics are not involved.
