I understand the feeling, but I think a semiannual Kickstarter "contribute this much to keep the bandwidth purchased for 6-12 months" might get more responses, since it'd be more visible. True, there still wouldn't be any real functionality worth paying $20 on, but at least that might help with the money flow without seeing those damn "monkey" and "pirate" ads
I have actually been thinking of doing something like that. I think it would be the same small group of people who would keep donating time and time again though, and I don't really see why they alone should bear the cost.
It'll work out, or it won't.
