How is a reference to the Berlin Wall out of line when people are calling for a wall on the border? Joel Send a noteboard - 23/11/2011 10:14:50 PM
I am still trying to figure out that comment; if he has nothing against foreign doctors, how can a doctors name sound "too foreign"? Not that the comment follows from that alone; it also fits the general GOP candidate commitment to reconstructing the Berlin Wall on the Rio Grande and refusing to recognize social contracts between homosexuals also, to name just a few things off the top of my head.

I'm certainly not a fan of immigrant-bashing or political posturing about illegals (or of Herman Cain), but "Berlin Wall" is just stupid, and the additional leap from "Berlin Wall" to "Camp Concentration" is even more so.

And much as I support gay rights, when even in Europe the list of countries that consistently poll at or above 50% support for gay marriage is as short as it is, I don't exactly think one can draw big conclusions from a conservative's refusal to recognize social contracts between homosexuals. Hopefully in time American conservatives will come to see the inexorable logic behind David Cameron's evolution on the issue and follow suit, but I'm not holding my breath.

Because they want guards to shoot people trying to get in rather than out of the country? I would have to see the polls in question to know whether the gay marriage comparison is applicable; I am sure you are aware of the distinction between civil unions and gay marriage, and it does make a big difference for a lot of folks (myself included, but then, because "marriage" connotes, and even denotes, so many religious things for so many people I would prefer their be no secular legislation on it in the first place.) Cain has a record of going well beyond mere immigrant or gay bashing though, as illustrated by the reference to his statement that most Muslims are extremists. What is the difference between saying Muslims are a threat to national security and saying Jews are?

It follows from "not that I had anything against foreign doctors, but it sounded too foreign." - 23/11/2011 06:18:20 AM 559 Views
Or doesn't follow, as the case may be. - 23/11/2011 09:26:34 PM 503 Views

Just because both contain the word "wall" doesn't mean they are the same thing. - 23/11/2011 10:38:52 PM 536 Views
No, but it does not preclude it either. - 24/11/2011 12:15:55 AM 741 Views
