But if you note, what happened there? Was it a change in the meaning? NO. It was a change in how it was USED, which then led to a change in the vernacular meaning.
It is not the meaning of words that gives offense (with exceptions). It is the context, and the intent behind them.
I don't think we should use the retard because of what the word has BECOME. I do think, however, that words would not become insulting as readily if people chilled the freaky monkey out.
