To quote, "a mutation of the gene that codes for the prion protein (PRNP)... occurs in only 5–10% of all CJD cases." I don't know if that means an inherited mutation or an environmental one. I mean, I suppose you could have that specific gene hit precisely by radiation in such a way that you start making prions, but that specific mutation seems super super unlikely.
