Didn't they already say Thank You, in that case?
The idea is that for the person giving something, it's nice to have that gift formally recognized/appreciated - for which a verbal communication is too informal.
...I'd feel that's the most personal they'd get from me. May be a cultural thing.
I know we sent out Thank You cards plus wine after my confirmation. Probably after weddings too, I wouldn't know. And I didn't throw a graduation party
I think it depends on culture. I don't think here it's very common to send 'thank you' notes at all. Unless after you got married, I think. Just cultural differences, same as that in some cultures people wait until everyone left until they open presents and in others that's considered unpolite.
