I have very little to offer, as mine's less than a week old. So I'm still learning

Background:
My wife's laptop died recently, and I'm considering an iPad as a replacement / anniversary gift. From what I've seen, the pricepoints are fairly comparable for an iPad vs. a laptop for a casual user (browsing, email, facebook, etc.) so convenience is a higher priority than computational power. We don't have a lot of experience with Apple products; I have a Touch I use exclusively for music, and that's it.
On to the questions!
1. How is typing emails, etc. on the iPad?
I haven't done a lot of typing on mine yet, and what I have done has been short. But it seems like if I'd force myself to type "right" it would be pretty fast and easy. My husband has some trouble with his because of the size of his hands...the keyboard is too small and his natural typing motions aren't quite right on it because of that. In particular he can't manage to hit the spacebar with the natural placement of his thumbs. So he's going to get an external keyboard for his.
2. We occasionally share links to websites. How easy would it for her to copy links from Safari into an email or facebook?
This is super easy and fast. I learned it by accident (this is my first Apple computer too) Touch, hold, and tap to select either "copy" or "copy all". Same to paste.
I'm actually considering looking into one of Apple's "trainings" to learn stuff like this...
3. How well do Netflix movies play?
Dunno, haven't watched anything on it yet.
4. What kind of accessories are important or at least useful to have? In particular, is the folding smart-cover thing enough to hold it upright for extended period sufficient, or would the hardpoint dock be better?
I decided against the new generation of the folding smartcover because it just affixes to the front of the iPad2 and doesn't cover/protect the back. My husband has the old one that is a full case, and it works great for him with the different viewing angles. I'll be getting something like that that's a full case.
5. Is there anything else I should know?
They charge tax on the apps! I had no idea I have only downloaded free apps on my phone I guess.
6. In general, how has your experience been with using an iPad instead of a laptop?
So far so good. So much more convenient and portable. And slick

Now that you mention it, I hadn't considered the lack of a USB port.
