Unless they like crappy music then I tell them I can't help because I don't understand crap music taste.
Though to be honest the only new stuff I listen any more is local independent stuff (not Indy just smallish stuff I can see live) so I usually recommend something along those lines. Most of it has either a southern blues or country influence so if they don't like that I don't bother.
Right now for country I would recommend Kimberly Dunn's song "Randy Rodgers". Or if they prefer they can just listen to "To Late for Goodbye"
For something more greasy blues I would say Lincoln Durham "Living this Hard."
For Bluegrass Everybody and his Brother but mostly just because my wife's uncle Mike is in the band and I have always liked Mike.
