They were lied to in the way that you're being lied to when a car salesman tells you there's nothing wrong with that used car. Yes you're being lied to, but you're an idiot if you think that there's nothing wrong with that used car.

A football player knows the severity of trauma they are signing up for. Even if they don't know the particular details of every potential injury, they have a general idea what that level of trauma can cause. Even if it hasn't been proven in football players before, we've known for a while the sort of long term effects blunt force trauma can have on the brain. We've at least known that the brain doesn't take well to it.

I have all the sympathy in the world for these players' injuries and their suffering. I don't have much sympathy for their ignorance. If they didn't know they could suffer permanent brain trauma, they didn't WANT to know.
