While I agree with you completely about nanny state laws, your logic about not wearing seatbelts doesn't completely hold up. If you're in an accident and not wearing a seatbelt, you can severely injure or even kill the other passengers in the car when your unbelted body goes flying around the cab at high speeds.

That said, I still agree with you that it should be your choice, not the government's, but you should at least know that your decision not to wear a seatbelt does place more lives at risk than your own, and factor that knowledge into your decision.

As far as I am concerned, people's freedom can go to hell as soon as their freedom or carelessness threaten others. As you explained in your first paragraph, that's the case when an unbelted person catapults through the car. The conclusion: make them do it by law. Admitting it's dangerous but leaving it to each on their own if they want to threaten their children or not takes the personal freedom a little too much for my taste ;)
