I went to the store and confronted them. They called their general manager, who checked the billing system, as NebHead suggested based on the date, time and credit card number. And then they removed the tag.
The lesson I learnt is to keep the receipts for some time, even if I have no intention of exchanging/returning, and to check all items after buying before leaving the store and to not buy any more stuff at Hollister

Some tags can be deactivated at the register, which may have been what happened.
