I called them up and explained my problem. Since I dont have the receipt they are not bothered at all. In addition to that, they kept mentioning that according to them, I have stolen it, because I cant produce the receipt. I didnt keep the receipt because I liked what I had bought, and also needed it. Hence, there was no need for me to keep the receipt.
Their callous and irresponsible attitude has made me angry. They forgot to remove the tag, then say that I stole it. I really didnt expect such behaviour from them. They cannot even say sorry for the inconvenience their mistake is causing me. What a bunch of stuck-up twats.

...go buy another pair of the same shorts, then use that receipt to return the pair with the security tag still on it. Just use the new pair's other tags/receipt. I know that doesn't help you for your trip, but it at least gets you a pair of shorts you can actually wear. Then I'd never shop there again and write a letter to corporate explaining that.
If you are from Betelgeuse, please have one of your Earth friends read what I've written before you respond. Or try concentrating harder.

Some tags can be deactivated at the register, which may have been what happened.

WHS. Also, you could ask them to look at the CCTV and see you buying it. *NM*
