Well, sadly, I can only get the most painful procedure

Glasses. I used to wear contacts, but my eyelids developed a hypersensitivity so the moment my contacts got the slightest bit dirty (i.e. in about 5 minutes) I would start having massive problems
That sucks. How did they manage to become hypersensitive?
I don't know why I stopped wearing contacts... but I stopped 2-3 years ago.
I don't think I actually near the legal bounds of "visually impaired", but it's still pretty bad. +2.75 OD, +3.50 OS, along with a good dose of astigmatism in both eyes
That sounds like you have a hard time seeing things nearby? I don't know if they can fix far sightedness with lasers. I heard that there may be a new procedure, but it's still very early on.
I've actually been considering speaking about it with my optometrist in a couple weeks! Not in a "do it sometime soon" way, but more a "is this a feasible option for sometime in the next 10 years" view.
If it's the way I think I understood it is, it may very well be an option in the next 10 years.
I have not, obviously. However, my uncle had his eyes done relatively early on when it started becoming more commonplace. He's still had to get reading glasses as his eyesight aged, but he was quite happy with the results and continues to be.
Today I heard about 2 unhappy people: one had dry eyes problems and the other didn't get her eye sight back as much as she had hoped. It's the first time I've heard about people who are unhappy about it.
SURVIVE? Probably. Would I have to undergo some major lifestyle changes and limitations? Definitely.
I think not only would I have a hard time surviving, I'd also become a burden to others.
I would get laser surgery so that I wouldn't have to wear glasses any more. I prefer them to not being able to see properly, but I hate having the limitations on my viewing field and seeing the frames.
I don't tend to notice them anymore. But now that you've mentioned them...
I actually have MORE of a problem with the latter since going frame less, strangely enough. For some reason the refraction of the light as it hits the edges of the lens is far more distracting than my simply wire frames were!
Wow that sucks. I imagine you expected things to improve without the wires.
That sounds like a damned good reason. I've been in that situation a couple times (ex. after taking a soccer ball in the face and getting my glasses all bent up) and it's quite unpleasant... I'd hate to imagine what I'd have to go through if I was stranded some where and broke my glasses beyond repair!!
One time I lost one contact lens and I had to get soft lenses and my eyes couldn't handle it and turned red, so I had to take them out and put back 1 hard lens, and then drive home. At the time my eye sight was a lot better than it is now, though.
So I'm getting my eyes checked today to see if eye can get laser surgery

I've read it destroys your night vision. Do you need to drive at night? *NM*

I'm just going to skip current technology solutions and wait for Geordi LaForge visors.
