First, I didn't want the lit screen so I was only looking for the unlit screen. I stare at a computer at work 8 to 12 hours a day and then a laptop at home for the net. I didn't want to read on a lit screen, my eyes need the rest.
My second criteria was that I just wanted to read books. Not magazines, not comics or anything like that. I wanted something efficient and straightforward. No apps, no touchscreen, just buttons to turn the page and read. Unfortunately there is a small touch strip across the bottom of the Nook (which I hate).
I did look into the Kobo at first but I just didn't find it that "nice". It seemed a bit cheap. I would have preferred to support Borders as they are a business in my state but there were rumors of their demise (bankruptcy) and I wasn't familiar with Kobo or their services. I looked into the Kindle but the big turn off was the formatting issue. I think it is ridiculous that they insist on their own format when e-reader owners prefer ePub. It felt very Apple-ish to me with them refusing to get in line with consumer demands and insist on having to use their format.
I've been happy with the Nook although as I mentioned I don't like the touch screen part. I also wasn't that impressed with the battery life. Once I started hammering out my first book it started draining too fast in my opinion. In all fairness I did hear they battery life is better now.
I would still consider a Kindle one day if Amazon would give their stupid format up, but until then I'll stick with Nook models.

But wine was the great assassin of both tradition and propriety...

Nook e-ink touchscreen. Doesn't have the idiocy of the Amazon DRM, and it's conveniently shaped. *NM*

I don't think it's accurate to say real books will never be obsolete.
