I don't assume it, I merely included the possibility.

Google "corn snake".
But yes. I'd never get a python.

I wasn't sure that you'd conclusively decided it would be a corn snake if you got one. My experience living with a snake is confined to a single individual that was, eventually, rather large, so that's the only context I can offer (and freely admit that I avoided the thing like the plague even when he was small; I'm sure the owner will be along directly and give you a lot more useful information than I). The above comments by others that a snake works better as a curiosity than companion jibe with my impressions; your snake is unlikely to cuddle up with you at night, and if it does it will almost certainly be either for warmth or because it's deluded enough to think it can eat you.
If you want something slinky and affectionate I recommend a ferret (in part because even a small ferret is terrifying to even a 7' boa). Just be warned that while they have highly developed emotions and humor, they have NO concept of right and wrong. Think of them as flexible and cuddly little sociopaths (which seems to describe mustelids in general).

I see how there is an implied judgment on my part. That was a grave error.

Live feeding is illegal in the UK, unless the snake in question refuses all other food.

Good enough reasons, but making it illegal?! The nanny state is so bad they're coddling snakes? *NM*

I can't prove it, but believe the reptilian brain too primitive to comprehend concepts like "love".
