She used to keep our cat's litter box in the bathroom. The cat was obtained when one of my brothers was about 4 or 5, so potty trained.
Well, she noticed that after a couple of months, the cat would not go in the litter box at all. She and my dad couldn't figure out why.
Until they caught one of my brothers using the litter box. Apparently, during a vacation in which the cat came along, he had to go really bad. They were in between rest areas and exits, so they told him to use the litterbox.
Well he didn't stop.
And the cat wouldn't use it afterwards.
That could be your problem.
I need more cat advice

My friend kept one of her cats in a big dog crate when she had a broken hip and needed to rest.

It's sad, but once they start peeing outside the box, it's almost always the end. *NM*
