I knew we were having problems but never figured she would say she wanted it to end.

If he is not the one who wants it over I would suggest some professional counselling to help him begin the road to recovery. I put it off for a long time, the stigma of "getting help" keeping me in a bad place. Once I realized I needed help and got some I kicked myself for waiting. Months of extra pain and stress for no reason. 3 sessions later and my counsellor sent me on my way with the knowledge that what I was going through was normal and I would be ok, with time.
