I don't think releasing it is a very big deal, but I support his decision - Edit 1

Is it barbaric and beneath us? Or necessary?

It's hardly barbaric, we're not planning to drag him around Ground Zero behind a chariot or something, though the idea has some appeal. I find the president's comments, that we don't need to spike the football, to be quite reasonable, as are concerns over inciting violence though I think worrying about trying to appease the people who would do violence over this to be wasted effort. Whichever, if the photo were released I'd click on the link and I'm sure I'd derive some grim satisfaction in seeing him dead, I doubt I'd be alone in that feeling, and I see no reason to feel bad about it. However, it was the president's call to make, and we can always leak it a few months down the road, it seems a reasonable decision, at worst he is erring to heavily on the side of caution and good taste, there's no overriding need to release the photos, so this decision not to is okay by me.
