I did have a loop-shaped one that I tried last year, but her coat was so thick and tangled that it hurt her to use it. Maybe I'll just clip the top inch and hope that'll be enough.

hmm. i would suggest a mat rake, then shedding blade, or you could try the furminator - less painful
