Upgrading your computer can be fun, but it will also be a pain in the ass. The first thing I suggest you do is a little reading. You don't need to be a computer genious to learn the basics.
As for what to buy, I suggest you start with Nvidia. There drivers are more stable and is usually doesn't require more instaling the card, and putting the driver disk in. I have used both ATI and Nvidia and can tell you Nvidia is just easier.
