Or girls? - Edit 1

I'm from Indiana, so this is probably the definitive answer.

Major college sports are employment. The university want/needs the money, and that means they want the kids to play well. There is pressure to practice all the time to fulfill that expectation, or they risk losing all their scholarships, etc. They cannot work unless they want to stretch themselves beyond any reasonable limit. They should have their needs* taken care of, and probably make a reasonable amount of spending money.

I have no problem with players being funded, because otherwise the school is simply taking advantage of them to make money. However, I also believe they should have to make the grades. If one doesn't and is passed anyway, one isn't a student and should have to find another way into the big leagues. In short: it should be a fair deal for both parties.

*Edit: needs reasonably met. Nobody needs a cadillac at school.
