if the US hadn't gotten california ceded to it from mexico, i'm sure a bloody battle would have occurred eventually. but isn't that the biggest knock against american history -- that there isn't enough of it to compare with europe? hence my comment of "2000+ years". i still think the two cities are pretty similar in other respects, especially after wandering the streets of paris for the last week.
