Cat allergies are some of the worst, and they usually only get worse as time goes on. My mother can tell within 15 minutes if she's in a home with cats regardless of whether there is any evidence, and has to leave about 30 minutes later at a maximum and hope she has an inhaler around. Mine aren't that bad but I can definitely say that I need to get out of a home with cats after a few hours at the most, and my eyes burn and I sneeze and can't deal with it.
You don't want to start having severe problems breathing. Find a nice home for the cats. My friend's mother was dead set on keeping her cats and she ended up having a heart attack as a result of a severe allergic reaction and nearly died.
