I would be far more irritated if these companies' executives didn't pay taxes, either. Tom Send a noteboard - 02/03/2011 02:34:46 AM
If a corporation pays its top executive $30 million, at the current rates the Treasury will receive more of that money from the individual than from the corporation, so it doesn't bother me that much - in fact, it's a great situation for the government. Furthermore, if Wells Fargo had no income because it saved failing Wachovia and Wachovia had losses, it makes sense that it would pay no corporate tax. If Bank of America didn't make money, it shouldn't pay tax. What, are you going to tax corporations based on assets rather than profit? That's a great way to impoverish America in a hurry.

Exxon is taking advantage of legal ways of keeping assets offshore because the income was earned somewhere other than the US. That's just smart business and to keep Exxon from being able to do that is just going to put it at a disadvantage. I'd rather see Exxon doing that and employing people in the US, and paying crazy salaries to an executive who is a US person (for tax code purposes) and who then has to pay income tax on it.

If the executives, on the other hand, are playing shady games to try to avoid the taxes, then we have a problem.

This whole thing sounds like it was written by someone who doesn't really understand how the world works.
Political correctness is the pettiest form of casuistry.
