That does make sense: Clover 1 Dr. Brennan 0. Joel Send a noteboard - 16/01/2011 06:07:19 AM

After all, an episode of Bones just said the other day that babies tend to resemble their fathers a lot in the first year due to a trait probably evolved to encourage feelings of protectiveness in fathers. Granted that assumes cavemen checked themselves in mirrors a lot, but still, it was ON TV, so it must be true.

I think it would make more sense if this trait evolved to elicit feelings of protectiveness from the mommy, not the daddy. As you say, mirrors have been in short supply during most of the course of human evolution, but the partner's face should be highly recognizable. And on an emotional level, I think I'd be more inclined to love and protect a mini-SO than a mini-me anyway.

It would also make sense because the mother is really the more crucial figure during that time.

Most likely this is one of those cases where a TV shows fictional scientist got a few details right but completely misinterpreted their meaning. As opposed to quoting completely fallacious details in service of a correctly quoted overall principle, which is also common, of course.
