"Gender" is what words have.

"Sex" is what people have.

Except people also have gender.

Only in a grammatical sense. The word "gender" to describe a person's sex is incorrect, and used as a result of teachers' squeamishness when it comes to the word "sex".

'Tis a pet peeve.

Sex refers to biology. Gender refers to cultural roles.
