If you only look at murders perpetrated by white people it is 7%. There were 412 murders in 2009 so that would make murders by white people 29 assuming the average holds. There are a million white people in Norway so thier rate is still lower but the numbers are small enough to be comparable. It does undermine the argument that America’s murder rate is a gun control issue. White people in NYC have access to guns but the have comparable murder rates gun free Norway. The real problem is the drug trade in minority urban areas.
When I worked in Jersey City, I worked with a lot of kids from the 'projects' or the poor side of town. One girl told me about her graduating class at James J Ferris HS, she said 220 out of 500 kids graduated. I think my eyes popped out, 'cause then she said . "hey, my high school ain't bad. You could do well there if you worked at it, I took all AP classes and shit. You wanna talk bad, look at Henry Schnyder [high school], you can't say shit good about Schnyder.'
I'm sitting there thinking, 'your class failed to graduate some 280 kids and it's not the worst in Jersey City?' It kind of blows my mind that a high school can't even graduate half its kids. I realize a lot of kids get messed up with gangs or drugs, or just have broken homes that they're coming from, but I feel like 45% graduation rate is missing even a low standard.
31 people murdered in Norway this year. Do you know what this means?
