I gave up on that a while ago. - Edit 1

Most of my friends know how to get in touch with me (phone/e-mail/a few out venues). When I need to get in touch with them, it is not through facebook. I guess I've lost a few "friends" by not keeping up with facebook, but I can't say I regret it too much.
You know, I thought the same about Twitter for quite a while. And yes, there is some truth to that, but the fact is, you have a lot more control over what you can see on Twitter than on facebook. I use it mostly as a way to get quick notifications on things I'm actually interested in (unlike a Facebook feed), not as a way to project my stream of consciousness or vicariously experience someone else's bowel movements. Though I suppose it can be used for the latter as well, if that's your cup of tea. For me, it was that moment when facebook turned in Twitter that I realized it was over.
Facebook is the reduction of human interaction to the level of vapid narcissism. Don't even get me started on what that makes Twitter.
