The size is one of the things I didn't like. The iPad is a nice, big, pretty screen. The TAB just feels cramped and tiny. If there were a price trade-off for the decrease in size, I might be willing to accept it, but there's not. It really just feels like a big phone rather than an altogether different device. It also seemed slow compared to the iPad. The iPad is just generally simpler. Not as much application management, richer store experience. It's just a way more mature device.
I just can't see what he'd use it for beyond the initial novelty, and I see more potential for longer-term use with the GT. I'm disappointed that it isn't cheaper too (and apparently even with the smaller display the batter life is shorter with the GT?) Neither of us has any touch screen devices at the moment so I'm not worried about it feeling like a big phone...it will still feel like an altogether different device to us

I think what I will end up doing is waiting until Christmas falls within the return/exchange period, buy him one of them (you're making me strongly reconsider which one this will be BTW) and then have him go play with both to decide which one he really wants.
I feel like the iPad is too heavy for long-term reading. I also look at a computer screen with light shining back at me all day long. That's why I love my NOOK--it's lightweight and easy on the eyes.
That's what I have heard/read too, and one of the reasons I was leaning towards the GT. I don't have concerns about the screen type though, just the size/weight.
If I do go with the iPad you mentioned bundling it with Verizon's MiFi...initially I was thinking I didn't want 2 devices, but then it occurred to me that you can use the MiFi to use wireless on other devices too, so that makes a lot of sense.
We also don't have a dedicated GPS, and I was thinking the GT could also serve as one of these...whereas the iPad only can if I get the specific 3G model, which is even heavier.
I might be overthinking this just a little bit

Has anyone played with/bought a Samsung Galaxy Tab?

Yes, I think you might be overthinking it a bit.

Let me echo the screen is much bigger on the Ipad (which is an assest and a curse)

Don't have any personal experience with the Galaxy Tab

Exactly, which is why I'd say the iPad is the better choice.

That is exactly the question I'm wrestling with.

I've got iTunes stuff (just music and podcasts though, not apps). He doesn't.
