1940 - Romania signs the Tripartite pact, becoming an offical Member of the Axis of Evil.
1959 - Charles de Gaulle declares his vision for a Europe that reaches from the Atlantic to the Urals. That worked out well.
1963 - Lyndon Johnson's first full day in the worst job in the world is overshadowed by the broadcasting of the first evere episode of Doctor Who. One of these two men remains entrenched in the popular psyche to this day. Nice to know what's important in life.
1976 - Jacques Mayol becomes the first man to reach a depth of 100m without benefit of breathing apparatus.
1981 - National Security Decision Directive 17 is signed by Ronald Reagan, givingthe CIA authority to recruit and support Contra rebels in Nicaragua.
1990 - The first all woman expedition to the South Pole sets off in Antartica. They are expected to arrive somtime next week if they can finally agree on which way up to hold the map.
