And I'm not convinced it's accurate to characterize Spanish Catholics, even in the priesthood, as Franco supporters; it seems more like they were OPPONENTS of the "republic" that practiced systematic assassination against their order when it wasn't deporting them and confiscating their property. Stuff like the Nazis did to the Jews, and if they stopped short of making soap out of priests, they also lost the war. Asking which side is "the good guys" in that conflict makes about as much sense as it does in Israel and Palestine. You don't pick sides in that kind of conflict: You pray they kill each other. However, when one side is actively trying to exterminate your people and the other is openly supportive of them it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out who you want running the country. Choosing what you regard as the lesser of two evils doesn't make you as complicit as most liberals seem to think though (see: Electoral turnout, US).

The Catholic Church as a whole is opposed to capital punishment, and is fairly vocal about it.

Referring to the 1930s and then talking of re-evangelization is a rather painful gaffe, I must say.
