I think if the last century has shown us anything, it's that life in long lived fascist regimes (Mussolini's Italy, Franco's Spain) is far more preferable to, say, life in long lived communist regimes (Stalin's Russia, Mao's China, Cuba, Vietnam, Cambodia, ect.).

The body count speaks for itself. The Church made the right choice then, and it's making the right choice now.
