I've been working on mine since 1992, for fuck's sake.
The goal is to just write 50000 words one way or another.
At the end of the day I think NaNoWriMo is more about avoiding 'not writing'. Creating a somewhat achievable target and using it to motivate yourself. Will I fail? Maybe but in 2 days I've written 4000 words more than last month so even if I fail I win.
