I think that for them to do nothing at all is no different than a off-work doctor refusing to save a dying patient, or an off-duty policeman ignoring a mugging. A fireman has specialized knowledge, training, and in this case they also had equipment. Telling those men to drive right by that family was an act of inhumane cruelty.
