we're talking about fire fighters and a fire department. Men who have volunteered to be first in line to dive in to fire to save the lives and properties of others. A SERVICE that was not created as a business but as a government service to protect citizens. To quote from wikipedia's article on Firefighting in the US "In the early days of the fire service, fire departments were, more or less, social organizations in the community."
The mayor may be trying to run his fire department like a business, but it is NOT a business. It is a social service.
Would you ask these same things of doctors? Of EMTs? Of policemen? To refuse to help others in need on the basis of economics?
These people didn't call the fire department because their oven was smoking. Their livelihood was incinerating along with 4 furry loved ones while the fire fighters WATCHED. This family now has no shelter, no food, no clothing, no personal belongs and pets are irreplaceable. If the family has any of these things, it's because members of the community have more heart, human compassion, and concern for social welfare than the fire department.
