I can see why the firefighters thought they were justified, but damn. I can't imagine standing there and watching someone's home burn down because of bureaucracy. I get why this happened, but agree with others in the thread that life and death (shelter should count) decisions shouldn't be down to how much money one has or how good one is at remaining current on bills.
$75/year isn't prohibitively expensive. As others have pointed out, it should really be included in some kind of local mandatory tax. This homeowner consciously opted out of the fire protection service. He exercised his choice.
The question is really - should he have had the choice to begin with? Looks like "no."
