When I think of American Culture... Jeordam Send a noteboard - 04/10/2010 08:29:09 PM
several different things come to mind. Some of them are stereotypical and cliched, but these are what come to mind...

-Thanksgiving: Our holiday towards the end of November which is ours. There's turkey, football, and friends/family. But not just this, but we (as a culture) have this thing about the Friday afterwards. Some of us get up at the crack of (pre)dawn to get some deal...some of us shun the entire holiday shopping experience all together. Either way...there it is.

-The American South: It really is a culture unto itself.

-American Politics/Actors: Since we don't have any royals, politicians and actors go hand in hand as those people who are constantly a focus of the media. The pop culture & political worlds are becoming one and the same. There are Senate hearings about baseball doping...Lada Gaga is speaking on repealing an act of Congress...Mike Rowe is testifying to congress regarding trade skills of American workers...the list goes on and on.

-Modern Arts: I know that there is both music and cinema from around the world, but it seems to me that there is a very large cultural focus on the modern arts in America (music, film, fashion)...we even have reality TV shows to document this for public viewing.

-National-centrism: (made up word I'm sure) It could just be me, but having blinders (either intentional or unintentional) on regarding focusing on another nation's point of view on a matter doesn't really sit well with a typical American. Curiously, when this viewpoint becomes unbalanced with people who come to America from another country, and do not supplant their former beliefs with American centrism....there can be tension.

Some other things come to mind, but well...I'll just stop here.
