"Who may I say is calling, please?" is short and polite.

If it is between "May I ask who is calling?" and "Who is this?" then I would definitely pick "May I ask who is calling?" The other sounds rude. I am sorry it hurt your feelings but your boss did you a favor by correcting you. You were inadvertantly and innocently doing something most people consider rude and he brought it to your attention. When somebody does that to me I am all butt-hurt until I admit that they are right and then somehow - once I accept it and even acknowledge to them that I didn't realize how I was coming off and that I will work on it - some healing takes place and I feel better. I am hoping that happens for you.

I think "May I ask who's calling" is more polite.

Well, the whole asking permission bit is part of being polite.

Than you say. ''Ok." They may have a reason for not disclosing their name.

That reason is often that they are nutters.

I hate it when people pull the "attorney-client privilege" thing.

I typically say something along the lines of "And who am I speaking to?"

You don’t have to transfer for them if they refuse but you should still ask politely

It's quite simple, really. Do you like getting paid? Then answer the phone the way your boss wants *NM*
