There would be apoplectic outcries if I answered the phone in such a way

i rarely have to ask who it is because it's just my own clients calling me... usually they'll tell me who they are right away
also, caller id is very useful - if i don't know the number (unless it's work hours, of course [ or if it's unlisted {i hate that!
} ] ) i usually let it hit voicemail and then i find out who it is that way...

i'm my own secretary and a tiny business. i am not the biggest fan of phones etc. but i'm very polite about everything when it's a new client. usually, though, i answer the phone with 'hey, what's up' or something like that depending on who it is.
We're a very large department for a very large university. Although I have a fairly advanced caller id system, and I have most of the numbers memorized for our 100 faculty/staff, I forget some of the 75 adjunct faculty whom sometimes call and also the randoms that have inquiries about the department.
Generally I know who it is, but I get the occasional person I have to ask.

I think "May I ask who's calling" is more polite.

Well, the whole asking permission bit is part of being polite.

Than you say. ''Ok." They may have a reason for not disclosing their name.

That reason is often that they are nutters.

I hate it when people pull the "attorney-client privilege" thing.

Ah, you mean because they want to sell my boss storm windows or vinyl siding. *NM*

You don’t have to transfer for them if they refuse but you should still ask politely

It's quite simple, really. Do you like getting paid? Then answer the phone the way your boss wants *NM*
