I typically say something along the lines of "And who am I speaking to?"

if, that is, they don't tell me right off the bat, which most people do.
I don't think your boss did anything wrong. when you answer the phone, you are representing your company. even if YOU think you sound friendly enough to not sound rude only asking "who is this?" or similar, you may be wrong. I sound HORRIBLY depressed over the phone, even though I may be perfectly happy, so I feel comfortable suggesting that you may not sound as friendly as you think you do. You should at least take your boss' comment under consideration instead of blowing off how you might be representing him.

I think "May I ask who's calling" is more polite.

Well, the whole asking permission bit is part of being polite.

Than you say. ''Ok." They may have a reason for not disclosing their name.

That reason is often that they are nutters.

I hate it when people pull the "attorney-client privilege" thing.

I'm of the opinion that when you are at work, you represent your employer

You don’t have to transfer for them if they refuse but you should still ask politely

It's quite simple, really. Do you like getting paid? Then answer the phone the way your boss wants *NM*
