Some are connected to the city library system as well. Decentralization of books isnt something I necessarily like. But libraries make for good study areas and sometimes have really nice old books that smell lovely. I'm surprised you're surprised. Go watch The Breakfast Club to see an awesome high school library.

But yes, I've never understood it in those movies or TV shows either. What can a school library offer that a city library can't? Study areas, sure, but a study hall will do that job just as well. In primary school it might be useful to have a limited number of books for students who work faster or whatnot, but in a HS, where letting students read books during classes isn't really done (as far as I'm aware, it isn't here anyway), I don't see the point.

School libraries are structured to support the curriculum, whereas public libraries contain a more general collection that meets the needs of a larger community.

For example, a public library might carry a few books on say, literary criticism, but they might have one for every major area: American, British, Modernism, non-European, etc. A high that has English classes concentrating on British and American literature (mine did at any rate - Am. Lit my Junior year and British my senior year) will concentrate on literary criticism in those two areas - because that is what the students will be studying.

It's not only for pleasure reading, but for research. Most high school (and college and university for that matter) libraries are going to focus more on the non-fiction research collection than the fiction collection, except where that supports the curriculum, like Accelerated Reader books.

I'd be shocked, except that I'm not sure why a HS needs a library in the first place. - 11/09/2009 06:01:44 PM 799 Views
