but it doesn't sound like she meant to say anything negative about gay people. So, perhaps ill thought, but soul-searching-bad? I don't think her comment was THAT bad...if she'd said "Assholes" instead of "Faggots" no one would have cared, but her intended meaning would not have likely changed. She was celebrating her team's victory by insulting the other team. That's far from unusual or some cardinal sin against humanity.
but it's the fact that in her lexicon it's insulting to call the other team faggots. That she considers it insulting to be queer.
Yes, it does require some soul searching. She claims that she is not homophobic, but thinks it's a horrible insult to call an ostensibly heterosexual group of men queer.
Take another example, the word "nigger." Most people in modern America wouldn't be caught dead saying that particular word unless they are rappers or from the ghetto. But, if you sit down with some seniors, who grew up in an era when that was "just what you called them" you'll hear it much more often. It was internalized in their culture and behavior.
My own grandfather, a Baptist Minister, used to tell the most horrible, offensive jokes, but he didn't mean anything by them. He loved the blacks in his church just as much as the whites.
Language has power, and the words you speak, speak about you and what's inside you.
For this woman, she obviously thinks it's an insult to call someone a faggot, which most would agree on. Why is it an insult? Because it derives from the negative stereotypes about queer men. When you call an athlete, a jock, a faggot you are questioning his masculinity because of course all faggots are nelly queens.
So, yes, I do think she needs to do some soul searching. Actions speak louder than words, and in this case the action was posting that tweet, and the words are her claims to not be homophobic.
