I was on break at my job (Air Force) at RAF Lakenheath, England. Flipped the breakroom TV to Sky News and watched Live as the second plane hit. I immediately told the NCOIC (Non-Commission Officer In Charge) what had happened at what was being reported. He came in the room and that was when the first tower fell.
He immediately got on the phone with his Commander to get more intel. We were all sent home within the hour with instructions not to go anywhere and be ready for a deployment call. Then, a couple of hours later, we were called and told non-essential personnel were to stay by a phone and not report to the base until further notice.
3 days I spent by the phone, worrying every time I took my wife in to work that I would miss the Call and get reprimanded. We were finally given the All-Clear on Friday afternoon. The Pubs were quieter than usual and no one would let me buy a drink for three weeks after that.

I got a tardy and that lowered my grade and the prof wouldn't relent even though it was a national emergency and I was glued to the TV down stairs...
Then all of my friends and I went to my advisor's house, she bought us all Wal-Mart Chicken and we huddled together by the TV in her basement just in awe. We were a drama tam and we had been right there in NYC & DC only weeks before.
