It only took 17 days after the election to determine its result. Two rural independents have decided to stand with the Labor Party, which returns the Gillard government to power with a 2 seat majority (76 to 74).
However, it may not be all over yet. The seat of Corangamite in Victoria, which the Labor party counts towards their total, has had 95% of the votes counted, with the Labor party ahead by just over 700 votes. It's very possible that the conservative Coalition can claim the seat, which would mean the seats are locked up at 75 apiece, which would probably see the indepents change sides and side with the Coalition. The outcome may not be known for a long while however, for example at the 2007 election one seat took 6 months to determine.
Regardless, the news at the moment is that the Labor party has been returned to power, and Australia has their first ever democratically elected female Prime Minister.
