The argument is that excommunications can and do take place. That people can be barred from being Catholic.

I am not disagreeing with that, excommunications do happen, I am clarifying that you can't be excommunicated for being gay (performing gay acts and/or getting married is a different matter.)

I am clarifying for people who aren't Catholic, or weren't raised Catholic, thus not knowing how excommunication works.

Furthermore some people think excommunication means you aren't a christian anymore. This is not true, you are still considered a christian, and still considered baptized. That said that church "won't have anything to do with you" and considers you "expunged" from its society. Excommunication is supposed to tell you to wake up and get back to what matters and re-establish communication with God for the Catholic church considers you to really really screwed up.
