You an deveryone else seriously misunderstands the Volt.

The short-term boost that may have been generated by pumping money into GM, combined with the "cash-for-clunkers" stimulus of last year, may be translating into a short-term profit (and a very thin one at that). However, once the Volt comes out, you will see losses. It is too expensive for what it does, and reducing the cost is not an option because it has a high production cost. If the government were to support GM in a long-term fashion, the Volt MIGHT be able to come down in price due to streamlining the process, but not fast enough to compete with Japanese hybrids and electrics.
The Volt is technology that was and still is meant to be futuristic and it was NEVER going to be the backbone of GM and still isn't. And, it was always going to be released to a limited amount of markets and it was always going to be around 40,000. As I point out below, your perception that GM is throwing all its chips in the pot with the Volt is not correct. The entire project of the Volt and its battery technology was driven by competition with Toyota and Honda hybrids not by the government. The government may portray the battery tech of the Volt as the future (and Volt-like vehicles may indeed play a part in the future) but it has never been anything more than another project at GM. GM is developing multiple other projects that are not battery based that should be very competitive.
But wine was the great assassin of both tradition and propriety...
