I have had friends killed by drunk drivers, does that men I start a hate campaign against a liquor store being built a block away form where it happened? Because i can claim I am very sensitive to bars that serve alcohol because the man that killed my friend had been drinking in a bar and then got into his car and killed my friend.
How about I start to protest gun shops that sell firearms and bullets because my brother was shot and killed by a gunman who legally bought a gun and used it to kill.
Im trying to undo the work of a couple important amendments with the above situations arent I? Its simply wrong.
People do this stuff all the time because of another important amendment.
Doesn't make it right or wrong, but they have the right to protest all of these things, even though some of them are protected by constitutional amendments.
Same amendment covers people that do or do not want this Mosque to happen. They can talk about it all they want, but it won't change the right of the folks to build it (if they pruchase the spot, meet permits, etc). It may make them think twice about it, given all the negative feedback (though, from above, this seems to be coming from everywhere aside from NY).
For me the debate is about whether or not they should, not whether or not the could build it. I DO NOT think that Muslims are all radical/bad/violent, nor do I think that all Christians are good/sane/peaceful. If the trade centers were attacked by radical Christians for our ties to Pakistan, I'd think building a Christian church here crosses the line and would piss at least some people off.
Want to keep everyone happy? Build a community center with a Mosque AND a Christian sanctuary, with the memorial bridging the two. Or cut religion out all together. Otherwise, people are going to get excited about it.
