In a city like NYC, so much is packed into a space that size that it might as well be half the city away. Maybe people thinking it's "too close" are lacking that perspective.
It also seems to me (and I could be way off base here) that the site wasn't chosen specifically because of its proximity to ground zero, though even if it had been I still wouldn't personally have an issue with it.
